چکیده

The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) contains information about the details of the universe just prior to the decoupling of radiation and baryons at z ∼ 1100, as well as the universe the CMB photons have since traversed. Degree-scale measurements of the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the CMB have and will continue to give us information about the universe at decoupling; few-arcminute angular scale measurements should tell us much about the structure with which the photons have interacted along their paths. For a detailed discussion of these effects and the information that can be gleaned from them, see Hu and Dodelson (2001) for a recent review. We focus here on two science goals and the scope of instrumentation needed to target them. We also present a new idea for polarization and frequency multiplexed bolometric detectors that would enable extremely sensitive measurements of CMB polarization.

SPTpol: an instrument for CMB polarization measurements with the South Pole Telescope

SPTpol is a dual-frequency polarization-sensitive camera that was deployed on the 10-meter South Pole Telescope in January 2012. SPTpol will measure the polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on angular scales spanning an arcminute to several degrees. The polarization sensitivity of SPTpol will enable a detection of the CMB “B-mode” polarization from the detection of t...

Initial test results on bolometers for the Planck high frequency instrument.

We summarize the fabrication, flight qualification, and dark performance of bolometers completed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) of the joint ESA/NASA Herschel/Planck mission to be launched in 2009. The HFI is a multicolor focal plane which consists of 52 bolometers operated at 100 mK. Each bolometer is mounted to a feedhorn-filter assembly which defines...

Fast, electrically controlled polarization modulation of multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers by RF frequency modulation.

We report on a study of polarization properties of asymmetric, multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) subjected to electrical RF modulation. When subjected to RF modulation, complex frequency-dependent polarization properties, especially near the polarization switching point are revealed. We propose a scheme of rapidly switching the two RF frequencies modulating the VCSEL, in...

Some sources of systematic errors on CMB polarized measurements with bolometers

Some sources of systematic errors, specific to polarized CMB measurements using bolometers, are examined. Although the evaluations we show have been made in the context of the Planck mission (and more specifically the Planck HFI), many of our conclusions are valid for other experiments as well. 1 The specifics of CMB polarization signals CMB fluctuations are difficult to measure because of thei...

Design and characterization of TES bolometers and SQUID readout electronics for a balloon-borne application

We present measurements of the electrical and thermal properties of new arrays of bolometeric detectors that were fabricated as part of a program to develop bolometers optimized for the low photon background of the EBEX balloon-borne experiment. An array consists of 140 spider-web transition edge sensor bolometers microfabricated on a 4” diameter silicon wafer. The designed average thermal cond...
